Obituary

Diane Gibbons Dodds, 87, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2025. Born in Rapid City, South Dakota on February 11, 1938, Diane lived a life marked by dedication to education, family, and community.

A proud graduate of Smith College, Diane began her professional journey working for Air France in New York City. Her early career reflected her love for language and culture —passions that would remain central throughout her life. After marrying and relocating to Albany, New York, she transitioned into teaching elementary school and French, sharing her enthusiasm for learning with young students.

Later settling in suburban Philadelphia, Diane continued teaching until the birth of her children. She then embraced motherhood with exceptional devotion and energy. As a stay-at-home mom-extraordinaire, she immersed herself in every aspect of her children's lives and education. Her tireless involvement included roles such as Art Goes to School volunteer, PTA President, Little League team mom, Cub Scout Den Mother, Class Mother, Swim Team Mom, Track Team Mom, Soccer Team Mom, Field Hockey Team Mom, Lacrosse Team Mom, Softball Team Mom—and even College Ambassador. Her presence was a constant source of support and encouragement across countless school events and extracurricular activities.

After years of dedicated service to the Radnor Township schools as a parent volunteer, Diane returned to the workforce when her youngest children left for college. She became a library aide at Radnor High School and also served as the Township Archivist—roles that perfectly suited her love of books and history. She remained in these positions until her retirement in 2005.

In retirement, Diane turned her attention to her grandchildren with the same boundless energy and care she had given to her own children. Her home was filled with books, toys, and art supplies; her calendar full of games, recitals, and school events. She treasured time spent with family, and especially cherished annual family vacations in Ocean City, New Jersey.

Diane's interests were as vibrant as her personality. A voracious reader with an impeccable command of grammar, she delighted in literature and language. She was also an avid traveler who explored the world with curiosity and joy. Her appreciation for art enriched both her personal life and the lives of those around her.

Those who knew Diane remember her as a caring and giving presence — a devoted daughter to LaJoie H. Gibbons and F. Geraldine Gibbons; a loving sibling to LaJoie H. Gibbons Jr.; a supportive former spouse to Dr. H. Thomas Dodds; a nurturing mother to Graham G. Dodds, Melissa D. Lenhard, and the deeply missed Parker H. Dodds.

Diane's legacy lives on through Melissa, Graham and his wife Amy Kimball, and her grandchildren Nicholas, Caroline, Oliver, and Julia — as well as through the countless students whose lives she touched over decades of teaching and volunteering.
