Daniel Joseph
Seltzer
July 28, 1942 – July 9, 2023
Daniel J. Seltzer died peacefully at his home in Ocean City, New Jersey, early on Sunday, July 9, 2023, after a period of declining health. He was three weeks shy of his 81st birthday.
Dan is survived by his loving wife of nearly 42 years, Christine (nee McAvoy); daughters Margaret (Peggy) of Philadelphia, PA, and Nancy of Washington, DC; sons Dan, Jr. (Kerry) of Waterford, CT, Timothy (Michelle, deceased) of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Brian (Kristin) of Medford, NJ, and John (Nicole) of Springfield, PA; grandchildren Owen, Annie, Alex, Kevin, Abigaile, Amelie, Maguire, Siena and Evie; cousins Joseph Heise (MaryEdith) of Campton, NH, John Heise (Erin) of Bethel Park, PA, and Kathy Heise of Asheville, NC; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents Seth D. Seltzer, Jr., and Mary A. (Maguire) Seltzer, brother Richard Seltzer, wife Helen Anne (Madigan) Seltzer and son John Edward (Ted) Seltzer.
Dan was born on July 28, 1942 and grew up on Bryn Mawr Avenue in Bala Cynwyd, PA, a member of St. Matthias parish. He was a 1960 graduate of Lower Merion High School and then attended Villanova University, where he spent many hours singing and touring with the Villanova Singers, graduating in 1964. And he proudly spent two years in the U.S. Navy, serving mostly in the area of the Mediterranean Sea.
After his first marriage in June, 1969, Dan settled in Narberth, PA, where he would reside for the next 50 years, a few on Stepney Place and the remainder on Anthwyn Road. He was a dedicated and active member of St. Margaret's parish for all the years he lived in Narberth. His Catholic faith was central to all his endeavors and a constant guiding principle. All of his children attended St. Margaret's elementary school, a fact that was very gratifying to Dan.
Dan worked in commercial real estate for his entire professional life, taking over the family business upon his father's death in 1970. Dan was president of Richard J. Seltzer Realtors, Inc., until retiring in 2016.
A significant part of Dan's life in the last 35 years was his work in 12-step recovery programs. They were a tremendous help to him and his family, and he was very humbled and grateful to be involved with them. He considered his recovery to be one of God's greatest blessings in his life.
But nothing gave Dan more gratitude and more pride than the blessings of his family. His (second) wife Christine and the 7 children they raised together received Dan's most loyal, consistent and unconditional love. He felt that his family was his greatest accomplishment, his greatest joy and his most lasting gift from the God he believed so strongly in. One of the final sentiments that he voiced before his passing was how lucky he has been, referring to his wife, children and grandchildren.
Dan will be remembered by all who knew him for his integrity, his faith and his kindness. He was by nature tough on himself but compassionate to others. And he never wavered in his love and commitment to both his wife and his family. Although he will be greatly missed, that love will live on through his children and grandchildren.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday July 18, 2023, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church, 208 N. Narberth Ave., Narberth, PA. There will be a receiving line beginning at 9:30 AM; the Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:30 AM, with burial and reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dan's life.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Legacy of Life, 25 S. Main St., Yardley, PA 19067. Condolences can be sent to 3523 Bay Ave., Ocean City, NJ 08226. The family would like to thank the many caregivers and medical professionals who assisted Dan and his family, especially during the past year.
