Obituary

Daniel J. Haley, Jr., 92, of Gladwyne, PA., passed away on January 20, 2013. He has been a resident of Lower Merion for 59 years and ran for Township Commissioner. Mr. Haley was the former Chairman of the Board of Finnaren & Haley Paint Company. Mr. Haley was President of the company and managed it with his brother, Robert for many years. He was the second generation to head the firm which was founded by his father, Daniel J. Haley, Sr. in 1913. The third generation managed the firm until an acquisition by Benjamin Moore in 2007.

Mr. Haley graduated from Waldron Academy, West Catholic High School and Villanova University. During World War II he attended naval training at Northwestern University and Berkeley. He joined the US Navy the Friday after Pearl Harbor and served as a Naval Officer aboard a Submarine Chaser (PCE) for 4 years in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He traveled the world and entertained his family with stories of his many trips. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade in 1946. Mr. Haley was active in the Philadelphia Catholic Community and received the Knight of St. Gregory (A Papal Award), Sourin Award from the Catholic Philopatrian Literary Institute and the Barry Award from the American Catholic Historic Society. He was also Chairman of the Special Gifts Committee of the Catholic Charities Appeal. Mr. Haley was also active in the Men of Malvern Retreat House. He served on the Boards of Beneficial Bank, Immaculate Mary Home, Main Line Chamber of Commerce, Coatings Research Group, St. Francis Country Home and various business and manufacturing associations. Mr. Haley loved the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York City Ballet. While at Waverly he and his wife listened to the orchestra concerts on simulcast. He was a lifelong member of Aronimink Golf Club, The Union League, The Rotary and most recently the Merion Cricket Club. For the past 20 years he and his family enjoyed a home at Skytop, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Haley is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean Donnelly Haley, son, Stephen (Louise), daughters, Regina Pakradooni (Peter) and Katy Palmer (Walter) and granddaughters, Danielle Beckett Pakradooni, Sarah Rose and Jacqueline Grace Haley and grandson, Walter Pierson Palmer, IV as well as his brother, Robert and his sister, Rita McManus and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Anne Ward in 1958 and a son, Daniel J. Haley, III in 1985.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday January 26, 11 AM at St. John Vianney Church, 350 Conshohocken State Rd., Gladwyne, PA. Interment will be private. Relatives and friends are invited to a Visitation at the Church on Friday from 5 to 7 PM.
