Daniel Christopher
Campbell
April 3, 1939 – January 8, 2023
Daniel Christopher Campbell, formerly of Penn Wynne and Bryn Mawr, passed away at home in Virginia Beach on January 8, 2023, from complications of COVID-19 and Parkinson's Disease.
Son of the late Daniel and Sarah Campbell (nee Gillespie), Dan was born in Philadelphia on April 3, 1939. He graduated from North Catholic High School in 1957, LaSalle College in 1961, and earned a master's degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967. Dan worked in Brooklyn for several years and served in the National Guard before beginning his teaching career in the Philadelphia area. Dan taught economics and history at Upper Merion Area High School for thirty years before his retirement in 2000, developing life-long friendships with colleagues in part through leadership roles in the district's teacher's association.
Dan married his wife Anne Marie in 1972 and they raised their three children on Rock Glen Road in Penn Wynne. He and Anne Marie were active in Presentation BVM Parish in Penn Wynne and later in Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Bryn Mawr. Through their participation in the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, Dan volunteered with the Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project and for many years with St. John's Hospice assisting men experiencing homelessness in Center City Philadelphia. He loved learning as much as teaching, and frequented lectures and events at St. Joe's, Villanova, and the Philadelphia Committee on Foreign Relations.
Dan's mother and his paternal grandparents emigrated from County Donegal in Ireland to Philadelphia. He shared his deep affection for Irish history, music, and culture with family as well as friends both old and new.
Dan was predeceased by his brother John Campbell and sister Marie Werner. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Anne Marie (nee Dixon); his three children Dan (Katherine), Sheila (Edward Petersen), and Neil (Stephanie Nelson); and six grandchildren Margaret and Caroline Campbell, Michael and Jack Petersen, and Peter and Patrick Campbell.
