Clinton ("Clint") Newbold Ely, formerly of Merion Station, PA., passed away on February 9, 2025, at Foulkeways at Gwynedd Retirement Home in Gwynedd, PA. He was 98.
Son of the late William Newbold Ely, Jr. and Elisabeth Taylor Ely, Clint was born in Chestnut Hill, PA on January 24, 1927, and grew up in Spring House, PA. on the family property, now the Gwynedd Mercy University campus.
Clint was the beloved husband of the late Meryweather Strong Ely, devoted father of Tony, Peter, Timothy, Ann Ely Norris, and the late Ethelwyn Ely Erdmann. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was devoted to young people and animals. Known for his keen intellectual prowess, Clint wrote an unpublished novel, Wishbones and Wakes, composed poetry, was a hospital clown (as alter ego Dr. Jolly Bean), collected arrowheads in Pennsylvania and Tennessee, and was an animal lover from an early age, later adopting beloved rescue dogs and cats.
At the Penn Charter and Hotchkiss Schools, Clint was a noted and honored scholar-athlete. At the young age of 17, he graduated early from the Hotchkiss School and enrolled in the US Marine Corps where he fought in combat on Okinawa during World War II. After the war, he earned a bachelor's degree in English from Yale University and master's degrees in English and Russian from the University of Pennsylvania.
Clint was a distinguished and much-revered teacher at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT., Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa, FL., Friends' Central School in Wynnewood, PA., and the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA. He traveled to the former Soviet Union many times, leading school trips, studying at Moscow University, and taking part in a teacher exchange program.
Relatives and friends are invited on Saturday April 26th, Visitation from 10:30 to 11:00 with Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at Church of the Messiah. 1001 DeKalb Pike, Lower Gwynedd, PA 19022. Interment will be private for the family in the Churchyard and a Celebration of Life will follow at the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Indian College Fund .
