Obituary

Captain Charles R. "Pete" Greer, USNR, retired, of Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the age of 80.

Born to the late Clifford and Kathryn Greer of Philadelphia, PA, his life passions of sports, service and family manifested at an early age. He attended the William Penn Charter School, where he lettered in football and track and field, while excelling with honors in the classroom. Thanks to his hard work and dedication, he earned a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship to attend the University of Virginia, where he graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and a Commission in the United States Navy. Immediately following graduation, he married his love, Barbara Coates, with whom he'd raise three sons:  Peter, David and Thomas.

During his active duty Navy service, Captain Greer served as Communications and Intelligence Officer aboard USS Francis M Robinson (EDE 220) and Operations and Special Weapons Officer aboard USS Brough (DE 148). Deployments included operations in the North and South Atlantic and Caribbean. In 1963, Captain Greer separated from active duty and would spend the next 24 years of his distinguished military career in the Naval Reserve Intelligence community, culminating as Chief of Staff for the Director, Naval Reserve Intelligence Program.

Simultaneous to his Reserve career, he enjoyed a very successful and rewarding 50-year career in oil sales and account management with three different companies:  Texaco, Kirschner Brothers and F.C. Haab, from which he retired in 2013.

Captain Greer was an honorable and dedicated officer, as well as a patient and loving father. Those who knew him well, know of his love for Philadelphia sports teams – exemplified by his attendance at the Eagles' last Super Bowl appearance in 2004 – as well as road trips later in life to see those teams of his alma mater; Wahoowa. He is survived by his wife Barbara; sons Peter, David and Thomas; and six grandchildren who he loved dearly:  Anne, Caroline, Connor, Logan, Mitchell and Tyler.
