Obituary

Catherine Ebbitt Stanton, of Ardmore, PA, died on June 18, 2012. Beloved wife of Joseph R. Stanton for 54 years, she was the mother of three sons, Joseph, Mark, and Peter; grandmother of Brian Stanton; and mother-in-law of Christine Stanton and Monika Stanton. Other survivors include the children of her beloved late sister, Margaret Melsheimer of Dallas, Texas: a niece, Catherine Clark, and two nephews, Jack Melsheimer and Tom Melsheimer, and their families.

Born in 1915, Catherine spent her childhood and early adult years in West Haven, Connecticut. She met Joseph R. Stanton of Philadelphia in October 1941 in New Haven. Joe was working in New Haven for the FBI and Catherine had previously worked for the FBI. A year later, they were married in New York City. Following Joe's naval service in the Pacific and the birth of their first son, Joseph, in 1946 they moved to Ardmore where Mark and Peter were born. Joe practiced law for many years at Broad and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia and later at his home office. Catherine, a devoted wife and mother, found time to work at home as his legal secretary until he retired from legal practice in the late 1980s. She cared for her husband during the prolonged illness of his final years until he died in 1996. Later, she continued to enjoy many years of good health, continuing to swim at the Ardmore Y, becoming quite competent with her computer, writing a family history, and vacationing with her family. Since last August, she had been living at St. Joseph's Villa, a nursing home run by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the same order which had educated all three of her sons.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Colman Church in Ardmore on Saturday, June 23rd at 10 AM. There will be a viewing in the Church during the hour preceding the service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph's Villa, 110 W. Wissahickon Ave., Flourtown, PA 19031
