Obituary

Catherine R. Matey of Haverford, PA, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, after a short illness.  She was 94.

Born in Manasquan, NJ, Cathy was a long-time resident of Camp Hill and Mechanicsburg, PA, before relocating to The Quadrangle in Haverford, PA in 2014 to be closer to family.

She retired, after 30 years of service, as a remedial reading specialist for West Shore School District in New Cumberland, PA.

Cathy and her late husband, Ed, were founding members of Good Shepherd Parish in Camp Hill, PA, where she remained a parishioner for more than 60 years.  In her leisure time she enjoyed reading, spending time with family and friends, rooting for her favorite sports teams, and solving Jumbles.

Cathy was predeceased by her parents Benjamin F. and Rose (Lafferty) Newman; her beloved husband of 35 years, Edward J. Matey; her brothers James E. Newman, John J. Newman, George B. Newman, Thomas U. Newman, and Charles F. Newman; and her sister, Mary E. Newman.  Surviving are her sister, Josephine J. O'Gibney of Lakewood, NJ; her son and daughter-in-law, Edward J. and Ann (Guidera) Matey Jr. of Rose Valley, PA; her grandson and his wife, John E. and Emily S. (Lorber) Matey of Philadelphia, PA; her granddaughters Laura A. Matey of Alexandria, VA, and Sara R. Matey of Washington, D.C.; her great granddaughter, Juliet R. Matey of Philadelphia, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Mass at St. Denis Roman Catholic Church, Manasquan, NJ, and burial at St. Catharine's Cemetery, Sea Girt, NJ, will be private.
