Carl Samuel
Viola
November 30, 1948 – February 27, 2025
The world lost a legend on February 27, 2025, as Carl Viola of Narberth, age 76, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. A man of boundless charm, quick wit, and a heart as big as his smile, Carl left an indelible mark on everyone who had the joy of knowing him. No one was a stranger in his presence -- he connected with anyone who crossed his path, and he inevitably left them smiling.
Born on November 30, 1948, in Pittston, Pennsylvania, Carl's magnetic personality and zest for life were evident from an early age. He had a gift for making people laugh, a twinkle in his eye that never faded, and an uncanny ability to turn any moment into something memorable.
A true Renaissance man, Carl excelled in business, the arts, and athletics. He developed a love for piano, tap dancing, and storytelling early in life—passions that would stay with him forever. After graduating from Temple Pharmacy School in 1971, he owned and operated two independent pharmacies in Camden, New Jersey, for 35 years, serving his community with dedication and care.
His intellectual prowess was undeniable, earning him a place in Mensa, the high IQ society. But Carl wasn't just brilliant—he was a fierce competitor and leader. His passion for rowing led him to become a Masters World Champion rower and serve as President of the Undine Barge Club. He loved the dedication and physical fitness that was inherent in rowing, but he equally loved the brotherhood of his friends from the water. They pushed each other on the river and celebrated many great times off it.
He represented Team USA's first Dragonboat team in 1983, again in 1985, and captained the U.S. Dragonboat team in 2009. As a valued member of The Haverford School's Board of Trustees, he shared his wisdom and leadership to help shape future generations.
Carl's talents seemed limitless—whether leading a team, playing the piano, lighting up the dance floor, or sinking a perfect shot in pool or ping pong. But beyond his many skills, it was his authenticity, warmth, and ability to light up a room that truly set him apart.
Carl was the ultimate cheerleader in life— at his children's many sporting events, belting out words of encouragement with his booming voice, or dancing through the house with a song and a joke. He was always whistling, a soundtrack of pure joy that followed him wherever he went. His love for his "beautiful bride," of 53 years, Monnie Viola, was legendary, and he never hesitated to let the world know that she was "the love of his life." Their love story was one for the ages—a testament to loyalty, laughter, and devotion.
Above all, Carl was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Monnie Viola; his brother, Michael Viola, and sister-in-law, Marci Viola; his children, Michael Viola and his wife, Tracy Viola, Christopher Viola and his partner, Janna Burrows, and Margaux Viola and her husband, Oliver Kell; and his cherished grandchildren, Ashley Viola, Erin Viola, Jaxson Kell, and Brooks Kell. His family was his greatest joy, and he demonstrated every day what it meant to live fully and love deeply.
A private funeral service will be held for the family.
A celebration of Carl's extraordinary life will be held on April 26, 2025 at 1:00 PM, at the Undine Barge Club's Castle Ringstetten in Philadelphia (4347 Kelly Dr., Philadelphia, PA 19129)
. In honor of his spirit, the family invites attendees to share stories, laughter, and perhaps even a whistle or two in his memory.
Carl's legacy will live on in the laughter he inspired, the love he shared, and the joy of a perfectly timed joke. If you hear a whistle in the wind, know that it's him, reminding you to embrace life with a smile.
In honor of Carl's decade-long battle with Alzheimer's, the family requests that donations be made to the Penn Memory Center (South Pavilion, 3400 Civic Center Blvd, 2nd Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19104) in lieu of flowers.
