Anne M.
Mchugh
January 9, 1929 – May 9, 2024
Anne M. McHugh (Sweeney) of Overbook and Berwyn PA, passed away peacefully May 9, 2024 in Ocean City NJ. Born in Newtowndrumgornan, Donegal, Ireland to Edward Sweeney and Ellen (Martin), she was one of 10 children.
After working in her sisters hair salon, where they brought the first permanent wave machine to Donegal Town, Anne moved to London, then Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, to work for Procter & Gamble in hair product research and development. Eventually she moved to Philadelphia PA, to live near her sister Bridget Pawlowski and later Bernadette Sweeney, and soon met her husband Charles R. McHugh where they raised 5 saintly children.
Anne is known for her love of literature and poetry, but most especially for her ability to find humor in most things. When she wasn't sharing stories with friends and family, she was throwing impromptu dinner gatherings, learning about antiques, enjoying theatre group and luncheons or spending time with her grandchildren. There is nothing she wouldn't do for her husband, children and their families. She wanted to know if anyone needed her help before making plans of her own. Her life priority was to unburden those whom she loved with compassionate eyes and empathetic words of wisdom…. or Shakespeare.
She is predeceased by all her siblings, her husband, daughter Moira and grandson Sean. She is survived by her children: Brian (Cathy), Deirdre Dooner (Pete), Charles Jr., Maryellen DiMarino (Jay), and Grandchildren: Caroline, Shane (Liz), Margaret, Fiona, Ryan, Jake, Maeve, Audrey and GreatGrandchild: Niall.
