Anne S.
Mcalaine
January 4, 1940 – April 15, 2026
Anne Bourneuf Stokes McAlaine born on January 4, 1940 passed away on April 15, 2026 at the age of 86. She lived a long, full life, surrounded by love and laughter, which she so often inspired.
Though she'd joke that she never 'grew up', she split her childhood between Manhattan and Fenwick in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. She was a proud graduate and alumna of 91st Street Sacred Heart and Manhattanville College. Her sharp intellect, organization, and hard work allowed her to excel in her academics with a particular penchant and enthusiasm for math. Continuing the legacy of Bourneuf women, she successfully pioneered in a profession dominated by men, being the only woman and the valedictorian of her IBM cohort, as a computer programmer. She continued to put her mathematical and computer prowess to use as a math teacher and an IT specialist at Bryn Mawr College.
Anne was a loyal wife of nearly 62 years to Bob McAlaine and proud mother of four children, who spanned 14 years in age, having her youngest at just shy of 44 years old. She'd proudly recount the years she kept everything organized while the children were in four different schools and pursuing various passions. She'd start her days with early morning aerobics to keep her sane(ish) and end them cheering at her children's sporting events.
A natural host, she was the matriarch to both the Stokes and McAlaine families, establishing annual traditions to celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and hosting bridal showers for her nieces and nephews. At weddings, she was the first on the dance floor and she particularly loved the Mummers Strut. A voracious reader, dedicated New York Times crossword puzzler, and an avid Philadelphia sports fan, she also loved playing golf, tennis, paddle tennis, and bridge, which she taught as the "Ambassador of the Bridge Ladies".
Anne will be greatly missed, particularly her quick wit, vivid memory, storytelling, New Years Eve chocolate soufflé, and kindness. She was a great listener and always sought out and built genuine relationships with those who needed company or were down on their luck.
Anne, known affectionately as Annie by her family and friends, was preceded in death by her father Thomas Stokes, her mother Esther Bourneuf Stokes, her sister Jane Stokes McMillan, and her son Dan McAlaine. She is survived by her sister Maggie Stokes, husband Bob McAlaine, son Tom McAlaine, daughter Molly Dagit, son-in-law Murdoch Dagit, daughter Katie McAlaine, son-in-law Zeke Callanan, and her four grandsons, who affectionately know her as 'Toot'.
In lieu of flowers, tributes can be made in her honor to Sacred Heart Academy in Bryn Mawr or The Cradle in Evanston Illinois.
Join us for her Celebration of Life, which will be held in September, more details to follow.
