Angelina "Angie" Marie Odorisio of Ardmore, the former Angelina D'Ambrosio, died April 25, 2014, at Paoli Memorial Hospital. She was 94.
Born March 29, 1920 at home in Green Tree Hollow, Paoli, she was one of eight children of Jennie Cogliano D'Ambrosio and Charles Angelo D'Ambrosio. The house had no electricity or running water and all the children helped out on their family's small farm. Her late mother helped support the family by working as an electrician's helper on the Pennsylvania Railroad for 25 years while her late father raised and sold produce.
Mrs. Odorisio attended Tredyffrin schools then worked until she married Joseph W. Odorisio Sr. of Ardmore in 1946. They raised two sons, Joseph and Richard. After her sons were in school, Mrs. Odorisio began working in the food services department for The American College and Society of Chartered Life Underwriters in Bryn Mawr, now Barrack Academy. She also did banquet waitressing the former Sunbrook in Radnor, now the Villanova Conference Center.
Mr. and Mrs. Odorisio celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in July 1996. Mr. Odorisio died two months later, in September 1996.
Mrs. Odorisio was devoted to caring for her family. The kitchen was her domain and her homemade Italian dishes and desserts were legendary. There was always an extra place at her table to share in the bounty. Holidays and birthdays were like reunions and she'd seat as many people as she could fit in her dining room. Each year, she would start preparing weeks before Christmas Eve for the Feast of the Seven Fishes. This tradition spanned over nine decades and included siblings, then in-laws and, later, daughters-in-law and her five grandchildren. The preparations expanded to the next generation and, after cooking until she was 91, she finally was able to be a guest at the last two Christmas Eve feasts.
In earlier years, Mrs. Odorisio enjoyed traveling with her husband, his two brothers and their wives, especially to the Atlantic City casinos. She later went on trips with the St. Denis Church senior citizens. In the 1990s, she spent summer months with her granddaughters at her son's and daughter-in-law's North Wildwood, N.J., home.
Helping to care for all of her grandchildren was one of her most profound pleasures. She also was like a grandmother to the seven children of Richard and Lois Howard of Bucks County. Mr. Howard had lived with the Odorosios in the 1960s while he was at Villanova University and he subsequently became like an adopted son.
Mrs. Odorisio was a devoted member of St. Colman's Catholic Church for over 65 years.
The widow of Joseph Odorisio Sr., she is survived by her sons, Joseph W. Odorisio Jr., and his wife, Susan Greenspon, of Ardmore; Richard J. Odorisio and his wife, Melissa, of Bryn Mawr; and grandchildren, Rebecca, Sarah, Joanna, Joey and Justin Odorisio. She outlived all of her 7 siblings and their spouses as well as her late husband's three siblings and their spouses.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014 at McConaghy Funeral Home, 328 W. Lancaster Ave., Ardmore, and again from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at St. Colman's Catholic Church, 11 Simpson Road, Ardmore.
