Alice Baker Cullen

Alice Baker Cullen passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, one day before her 84th birthday, surrounded by her family.

Born and raised in New York City, Alice attended the Spence School, Mount Vernon Seminary, and Bennett College. She later made her home in the Philadelphia area, where she built a life rooted in family, friendships, faith, and community. There, she found lasting happiness with her beloved husband, Craig, with whom she shared a love of adventure, travel, and sailing.

Alice was a woman of remarkable presence. Tall, elegant, and naturally poised, she appreciated beauty, gracious living, and the joy of bringing people together. She loved entertaining family and friends, creating a welcoming home filled with laughter and lively conversation. Known for her quick wit and unmistakable sense of humor, Alice was also refreshingly candid. She believed in honesty, spoke her mind with conviction, and never pretended to be anything other than herself. Those who knew her best admired her authenticity, her courage to say what she believed, and the integrity with which she lived her life.

Alice was deeply involved in the community she loved. She served as President of the Garden Workers, where her passion for gardening earned her the Renée Redman Trophy Award. An exceptional gardener, she took great pride in creating beautiful gardens at every home she lived in, including a remarkable vegetable garden that her family remembers fondly. She also loved to cook and was known for preparing delicious meals that brought family and friends together. She volunteered with the Philadelphia Orchestra, was an active member of both the Acorn Club and Merion Golf Club, and was a devoted member of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Her faith was an important part of her life, and among her greatest joys was participating in the church's Casserole Blitz, a ministry that reflected her desire to care for others.

Alice loved golf and the friendships the game brought into her life. In her younger years, she also loved playing tennis at the Merion Cricket Club, where her formidable serve earned her the nickname “Ace.” She was an avid bridge player who treasured the camaraderie and lifelong friendships the game created. Together, she and Craig designed, built, and cruised aboard their sailboat, exploring the Caribbean and creating cherished memories together.

Above all, Alice treasured her family. She delighted in celebrating their accomplishments, milestones, and time together.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Nemo (Jon Nemo); her son, John Brooks (Caryn Brooks); her stepdaughter, Lindsay Scott; her stepson, Woody Cullen (Carolyn Cullen); her beloved grandchildren, Chloe Brooks, Elizabeth Brooks, Brooks Nemo, Alex Nemo, Nicky Nemo, and Blake Nemo; her step-grandchildren, William Scott, Henry Scott, Lily Scott, Emma Cullen, Craig Cullen, and Robbie Cullen; her sister, Joan Brooks Baker; her niece, Meredith George; and her nephews, Tom Mallory and Baker Mallory. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Craig Cullen; her son, Christopher Brooks; and her sister, Barbara Baker Mallory.

She lived with elegance, spoke with honesty, laughed often, and never apologized for being exactly who she was. Her strength of character, sense of humor, generosity, and unwavering authenticity left an indelible mark on her family, her friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.

A private funeral will be held for the family. A celebration of Alice’s life will take place in the fall, with details to be announced at a later date.
